When a vehicle is not mass-produced, but manufactured as a unique specimen, specific EU provisions can be applied for its approval. This procedure is currently available for:

• Vehicles of category M1 (passenger cars)
• Vehicles of category N1 (light commercial vehicles)
• Vehicles for special use, belonging to any category

The European individual approval according to Article 44 of Regulation (EU) 2018/858 is automatically recognized in all Member States of the European Union.
The national individual approval according to Article 45 of the same Regulation is valid in the country that issues it, but can be accepted by other Member States.

For this type of approval, destructive tests are not required and exemptions may be granted with respect to the requirements for global approvals.
